Last night we were treated to a lovely sunset across the Chiltern Valley. The only sounds I could hear as I stood on the back counter, were the Swallows and House Martins as they gathered the last flies of the day and the cows calling their calves, it was the perfect end to a perfect day.
This morning (Sunday) started later than usual at 7.15am for me, as I slept like a baby, it must have been all that walking yesterday. Once we were up and about, Paddy got his walk up the towpath as usual and I took in the views and the birds singing to announce another lovely day.
A Mallard was showing her ducklings how to eat bread, they had better like the taste because they will be thrown plenty of it in their life time. Brown bread is much better for them than white bread.
After breakfast and the running of the generator, which seems to be working fine with the inverter/charger phew, we took ourselves off for a walk to Scholar Green.
We walked down the towpath past Ramsdell Hall. This family home is superb and its dark red brick work makes it stand out. It was built around 1760 by the Lowndes Family. It is thought that William Baker designed and oversaw the building of it. The same architect who designed Baker Street in London. It is a truly stunning looking house and home with wonderful views over the Chiltern Valley.
Just past the Hall there is a wood which is full of Bluebells and Wood Anemones, I wish this photograph did them justice.
We walked along the towpath to Bridge 87 and up on to the road.
There are 3 pubs in Scholar Green, this is the first one near Bridge 87, the Rising Sun.
The Traveller’s Rest.
Scholar Green is a village of modern and older properties, there is a co-op, hairdressers, primary school and two churches. We did not go down the side roads so there may have been other shops. We passed a house with a lovely old 1959 VW Camper Van in the driveway and it is used as a wedding vehicle. If you want something different, then what a great way to travel to your wedding.
The Bleeding Wolf which can be easily reached from the 48hr moorings at Hall Green lock and looks a pretty pub.
We turned off before heading into Church Lawton.
We returned to the canal at Bridge 94, having walked down Moss Lane. This is Hall Green lock as seen from the bridge.
We got a lovely view of Mow Cop from the towpath.
Milestone.
Back at the boat, after an enjoyable walk it was time for lunch and feet up for the afternoon movie.
