Interesting listen.

Good Sunday Morning to you all.

I have been sat listening to Emma Smith. Emma Smith was interviewed at London Canal Museum in November 2014 about her time on the boat during World War II. Emma was an "Idle Women". The nickname was taken by the initials "IW", which actually meant "Inland Waterways. In no way were the "Idle Women" Idle. They were extremely hard working.
Please go to this LINK and take some time out of your day to listen to this wonderful woman.

  1. A very interesting account of wartime working on the canals and I had the feeling that not all was revealed... for my father related to me of how a variety of food stuffs was lifted from the fields during that time, for he had a boat too.

  2. Hello A Heron's View.
Thank you for your comment. I think the interview could have gone on a lot longer with more revelations of the wartime working of the canals and I have no doubt that they would have gotten food from the fields alongside the canal. Sadly with so many of the original boating families having passed away we will never really know the real life of many of them, which I find really sad, because I am so interested. I would love to know more about the 'Idle Women' because it is something I think I would have done had I been around then.
    Kind regards Jo
